Black Activists - Julian Bond

Julian Bond was born January 14, 1940 in Nashville, Tennessee. Julian Bond attended Morehouse College in Atlanta and ever since has tried to make a difference in the world through his actions. Julian Bond is an activist, a writer, a politician and a professor. These are just a few of the many talents of a man who has a true vision of equality for everyone.

Activist

Julian Bond has been an activist and a leader in the civil rights movement for many years. Bond help to found the human rights group Committee on Appeal for Human Rights (COAHR). COAHR was an organization that looked for human rights and equality. The group utilized sit-ins to voice their concerns and demands. COAHR through their non-violent actions helped to desegregate movie theaters, parks and lunch counters in theAtlantaarea.

Julian Bond also helped to found the group Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). SNCC emerged from the student sit-ins which started with four students and turned into thousands of students across the south. SNCC also worked in voter registration drives throughout the south. Civil rights was the main focus of both of these groups.

Bond also helped to found the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) a non profit civil rights organization that offers legal representation at no cost to the victim of hate groups.

Julian Bond has always worked for the rights of all.

Julian Bond has held many titles throughout his illustrious career and fight for civil rights. Julian Bond is an author of several books and articles working for the Atlanta Inquirer; a protest paper and publications like Time Magazine and The Pegasus. Bond has written books, poems and articles most on the rights and struggles of the African American.

Politician

Julian Bond has had a long and varied career in politics. Bond served four terms in the Georgia House of Representatives and six terms in the Georgia Senate. Bond was met with adversity in these positions but continued to strive and fight for what was right. When Bond was only 28 years old he became the first African American to be proposed as a candidate for Vice President of theUnited States. Although Bond was grateful for this honor he had to decline due to the fact that he was no of age to serve as VP of theUnited States.

Professor

Julian Bond has taught as a professor at numerous Universities and has been given honorary degrees at multiple Universities as well. Bond uses his talents to teach others about what has happened in the past, the changes that have been made and the changes that still need to be made in the world.

Julian Bond has received many different honors and accolades throughout his career as he with others struggled for justice for all. Bond continues to work for the rights of the underprivileged and under-represented. Bond is a man that uses all the tools that he has to get his message across to the world.
