Five Cartoons I Don't Let My Children Watch
79
Ed Edd n Eddy
The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
Chowder
I love cartoons I have been watching them since I was a child. There are some really good cartoon shows that are out there today. There are also some shows that I feel are not really good for kids. I have chosen five shows that I will not let my kids watch. Four of the shows are actually made for children and the last one is an adult cartoon. There are several reasons why I do not like these shows and will not let my children watch even though these are kids’ cartoons.
- Ed Edd n Eddy – Ed, Edd n Eddy is a show about three young friends who continuously try to scam money off of their friends to get candy. Ed, Edd and Eddy’s schemes never work but are the plot of each and every show. This cartoon is annoying to me because it is a group of boys that are always getting into predicaments while trying to scam other kids. Even though their scams never work this cartoon just seems really pointless to me and sends a strange message to children.
- The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy – The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy is a show about two kids Billy and Mandy making the Grim Reaper their friend for eternity. This cartoon can be really disgusting, disturbing and over the top especially for a kids cartoon. There are so many things wrong with this cartoon its hard to limit it to just one reason.
- Chowder – Chowder is a show about a young boy named Chowder who assists a chef. Although this show has some potential the characters can be really annoying and obnoxious. Sometimes the show does not seem to have a point at all and there are some disgusting parts on this show as well. There are so many other cartoons out there that are better than this cartoon show.
- The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack - The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack is a show about a young boy named Flapjack who is being raised by a whale. The whale Bubbie and Flapjack rescue Captain K’nuckles a pirate who tells the two about CandiedIsland; which is an island made of candy. The show is about their crazy misadventures in pursuit of CandiedIsland. This cartoon can be disgusting and Flapjack and the pirate are pretty obnoxious. Some of the story lines are not really kid-friendly even though the focus is on getting candy.
- Family Guy – Family Guy is an adult cartoon show about the Griffin family. The family consists of the parents Peter and Lois, their children Chris, Meg and Stewie and their dog Brian. This show has a great deal of adult humor and although I love this show it is not kid-friendly at all. My children try and watch it because they find it funny but I will make them wait a few years for that.
As a parent I may seem like I am a little overbearing not letting my children watch some cartoons, but there are so many other cartoons that my children can choose from. There are other cartoons that annoy me that I still let my kids watch because they are not so bad just irritating to me. When a new cartoon comes out I usually try and watch a few episodes of the cartoon with my kids and then decide whether or not they can continue to watch them or not.

- Five Cartoons I Don't Let My Children Watch
There are five cartoons that I do not let my children watch. These cartoons have no educational value and in most cases are a bit graphic in nature. The five cartoons are Ed Edd n Eddy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Chowder, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and Family Guy. What an awesome idea for the hubmob!!! I totally agree with you, and def. not South Park, but I am sure they are not up that late!! lol
dori
What is happening to us? These are for kids? Glad i don't have any young ones now-- my son and his wife are very careful about the limited amount of TV my grandkids watch. Sometimes the box is not on for days at a time.
TM, I think you nailed the character reference. Did you share that with him? :-)
Great hub, and good to know there are actually parents out there that do their job. My kids can't watch Family Guy, South Park, Simpsons, and they are always complaining about how the other kids are allowed. One day they'll understand...
I have to go check out jazzuboo just because of the avatar! That's a great one!
I totally agree with you. I have an autistic 20-year-old, mentally 7 years old. His hormones are raging. He collects everything Disney in video and DVDs. But I forbid him to own "Who Killed Rodger Rabbit." Jessica Rabbit was just too much woman for him to handle. That is DEFINITELY NOT a children's cartoon. Trying watching it again and you'll see a lot of adult jokes and snide comments, that the kids don't even notice . But they're for adults. No way. He knows he's forbidden to watch this.
There is far to much garbage cartoons out there and more on the rise..sooo glad I don't have children home to be concerned about. My tv doesn't come on until hubby gets home from work. I cringe to think what children are allowed to watch today. Great hub Triple Mom!
Yep, the word 'cartoon' used to mean 'kid safe'. Now, not no much. Good writing!
I would definitely consider this a very valid list. I usually watch cartoons with my kids when they watch them or at least see a few episodes of each show they watch. I would add Total Drama Island to your list. I don't let my kids watch that or Family Guy and Simpsons. I never took anything on TV too seriously. I really just consider it entertainment. But, it is great when some shows actually do teach values. My wife would agree with your choices more than me. I always watched these show not counting Family Guy with them and was never concerned. My wife eventually decided they shouldn't watch Ed Edd and Eddy. I wish more of the old Looney Tunes and Mickey Mouse and Hannah Barbera cartoons would be on. But, that just isn't the case anymore. I hate that I'm now stuck with Comcast and without Boomerang.
very nice hub again
TM, we ARE such moms, aren't we. However, I snuck out today for an hour and a half massage. I'll admit that I didn't think about any of them even ONCE!!!
Oh yeah! Unfortunately, I had to eventually come home.....
The only one of those I know about is Family Guy - and I certianly wouldn't allow Isaac to watch it, it's not suitable for a 4 year old at all, I agree with you.
Interesting hub, better for them anyway as most are total rubbish !
I think you have every right to decide what or what your kids do not watch. I enjoy some of the old Disney cartoons, but beyond that at a young age I actually preferred watching movies and news programs. That is just me though.
Hi Triplet Mom, I honor you for taking the time to make this list. I know this will help parents with their monitoring activity. You certainly have a good heart. My best to you always:) Thumbs up!
My son has decided that it is better to watch the family channel cartoons that others, and I wholeheartedly agree. It used to be a fight in the evenings as I refused to let him watch family guy and futurama - while his dad would...huge ongoing battle...
Only problem with family channel cartoons is that now if I'm not careful, we are late for school - due to my sitting and watching the darn things with him LOL
I definetely hate Ed, Edd, n Eddy! Feels like there's nothing done right!? And I totally agree with you on not letting the kids watch the other ones too. It's a little too much for myself too!
GONES
the fck is this sh!t? I felt the humorous part of my brain slowly decay every word I read when I gradually realized that you're SERIOUS. Your children will grow up to be fags or whores, depending on which sex they are. I say this with certainty, because if you are anally raping them over CARTOONS that they watch, you must make sure that your umbilical cord is attached to them every second of their life.
Enjoy your kids childhoods; your kids definitely won't. :)
The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy is kinda twisted. There is some real gross cartoon out now I don't know what it is called.
Family guy is not for kids, good call on keeping them from watching it!
SO WHAT THATS WHY THEY GROW UP KIND OF TWISTED.. JEEZ i mean once they grow up they know that the cartoon is just a cartoon yall people just overreact...
EYY MOMMA LET THEM WATCH GIRLS GONE WILD
i despise you all this
and war are what America
was built on!!!!
Since you say no to Family Guy, just out of curiousity, what's your in take on it's competitors like Simpsons or American Dad? I agree with you though about Family Guy, it's clearly meant for adults and it's even marketed to adults.
I agree with what you wrote here. Just because these are cartoons doesn't mean they are good for kids. Parents should also see their theme and the topics they show and allow or disallow accordingly. Not watching these cartoons will not be to the detriment of your kids, because when they grow up they will have all the chance to see these. And then they'll know why you did not allow them to watch when they were young, and they'll thank you for it. =)
Well I hope you let your three babies watch the wholesome American Dad? Family Guy is just bad. Was Lois mentally ill when she married Peter Griffin? And Stewie Griffin, what's with that little psychopath?
Actually Triplet, it's the ELDERLY that have real issues with cartoons. I once made the mistake of sitting my father-in-law in front of the Cartoon Network; because we don't have the Playboy Channel which he watches for the "interesting documentaries on cars".
He got to see just five minutes of South Park... and it took him FIVE WHOLE CHRISTMASES for him to shut up about the kind of "derranged and vile" TV that I watch. Oh my god, I would have killed him like Kenny, if it wasn't for the cardiac attack he got watching an 'interesting' documentary about Canadian pole dancers on HBO.
That's all folks!
I completely agree. There are way too many cartoons out there that I feel are too violent or send the wrong message. I think I stick with getting DVD's of older cartoons.
I think You are a caring mother who pay attention agout everything that your children do. Parents should pay attention to internet sites that are not useful to children also.
I am not so sure the kids "get" some of the inuendo. I used to watch Rocky and Bullwinkle when I was little. Then it was all about Bullwinkle talking funny and getting big lumps on his head. When I watched it later in life there were tons of double entendre scenes which flew right over my little pig-tailed head when I was small but as an older person I gained a whole new appreciation for and laughed just as hard.(for different reasons of course)
I would not give the kiddies too much credit for being able to understand everything being presented in cartoons.
Ed Edd n Eddy is a terrible cartoon for kids. I think the others are fine expect Family guy is not for kids. I do not see any harm in letting kids watch the other esp Ed Edd n Eddy, just point it out clearly how stupid and unrealistic that stunt is. Say something like that is so fake and will never work in real life. You might end up debating thou. lol:-)
No idea what the top 4 cartoons are, but if they are anything like the 5th one, Family Guy, then I would say you are spot on in not letting your kids watch them. That is probably the worst cartoon in primetime.
I don't think it matters which cartoons you don't let your kids watch. Take it from a 19 year-old; anytime mom and dad say "Dont watch this", guess what I am doing in about thirty minutes after? I'm watching it. I remember South Park was banned in my house, yet my brother and I still managed to watch every new episode without my parents ever knowing. Now, I'm not saying to give up on your children, I'm simply saying "where there's a will, there's a way". Those first 4 cartoons are just plain "creepy" even for an adult to watch. Family Guy however is not that bad. Contrary to what most people will say, Family Guy does tend to have a moral to each episode (most of the time). The language is the only thing that might be innapropriate for children. Great hub though, I love the idea. Keep up the good work, and check in on my hubs for movie reviews. You may also request a movie review from me and I will respond back as quickly as possible.
I haven't heard of half of these but I wat to see them...immediatly! Where can I see them (channels?) Obviously I hae heard of Family Guy and I also have heard of Ed Edd & Eddie
It is not just cartoons that you have to watch out for. Many of the shows on Disney aimed at tweens are terrible. The kids on them are rude and demanding and do not get in trouble for it. This makes your kids feel like they can act this way.
I don't think Family Guy was a cartoon ever directed towards children. Now the Cartoon Network shows are different but all kids cartoons suck now days anyway. Just get some old Looney Toons and you'll be okay. They're more entertaining anyway. I love adult cartoons, myself, and that's what I intend on making a career out of..but Family Guy is stale and just uses shock value to entertain and is uncomparable to the greats like South Park and the Simpsons. But I guess that's besides the point. The Disney Channel is worse than Cartoon Network, I think. At least the cartoons aren't exploiting child actors and actresses. *cough* Hannah Montana.
You sound like a real bitch for a mom
If I was told what I couldn't watch while it was on a children based programming channel. I would have ended up being a massive pussy who wasn't ready for whats out there in the real world whats next telling them that 9/11 was an accident people like you make me sick.
Get over your shitty christian morals
I agree with others. Those first four are terrible! I like Family Guy myself, and the Simpsons, Futurama, etc, but it's different because I'm in my mid twenties. I think you're right to keep your young children from watching it, when a child is an older teenager, I think it's not an issue.
I don't even think of Family Guy as a children's cartoon... it doesn't come on in a time that is ideal for children to watch, but maybe I live in the past by thinking children don't stay up as late anymore... lol?
Censorship is a load of shit. I hate when overbearing mothers can't get it through their pea-brained noggins that censorship is not a substitute for good parenting. Kids are stupid, but they're equipped right upon exit of the womb with the ability to learn, distinguish between socially acceptable behavior and the behavior that will get them 5 across the eyes; as well as the ability to form their own opinion.
Personally, I don't think kids should be protected from anything. They just need good advice from experienced adults.
DO YOUR FUCKING JOB, PARENTS!
"Kids are stupid, but they're equipped right upon exit of the womb with the ability to learn, distinguish between socially acceptable behavior and the behavior that will get them 5 across the eyes"
Actually, anyone who has children could tell you that children don't automatically know straight from the womb which behaviors are acceptable and which aren't.....
you are absolutely right..i personally love family guy but i am 22. i would not be happy if my 6 year old nephew watched it. Also, even Spongebob has some pretty crude content now I was disappointed! nice hub
sad part Im 13 and watch ALL these shows you brought up
I wandered across this blog b/c i saw the most disturbing thing on tv the other night... turned out it was an episode of CHoWDER with his shirt off... those nipples (shudder). eeeeehhhh. anyway, I don't have children yet, and i grew up on looney toons and hanna barbara, so the first thing i thought was if this is the direction of cartoons in this day and age, by the time i do have kids they won't be watching ANY cartoons!
I'm shocked and appalled by the rude comments from some idiots who clearly have issues. To attack someone's parenting decisions and their children's future personalities as a result of those parenting decisions, all from cyberspace... good God, do these people have anything better to do with their time?! I know there were things that we weren't allowed to watch as children, but i'd say i'm a well adjusted adult, and to be honest i can't remember at all what we weren't allowed to watch anyway... in the long run, a ban on certain cartoons is not going to eff up the kids, and allowing them to watch them may not either, but some of the content is just too disturbing, i wouldn't want to subject myself to it, let alone my children.
I'm glad that there are people out there that realize cartoons aren't automatically geared toward children.

One of my favorite articles on why cartoons =/= kid friendly. :D
Thank God for decent mothers like you. If only every mum out there can be as scrutinizing as you are over what you kids watch on tv, I bet the world will be a huge stepp closer to producing responsible generations. I have four children myself and I am always making sure that they don't get impacted by indecent cartoons. I have enough indecency inside of me already that I am looking for ways to get rid of. Thanks for puting this hub out there.
This is how its for me. My perents let me watch anything. south park, F-Guy, robot chicken, Anime play games like gta. they would buy me it for crimbo :D Now im prity smart and dont have any probs with my head. Its becouse my perants tought me that NONE of it was real and TRUST me. Ther r things out ther that god himself wont like. Try... dont blame me for telling you this AMV Hell 0 (not 1 2 or 3 and up ther not the 18+++ ones) This makes the bible just like famliy guy couse 5000 fish is funny after watching Bu-Ka-Ki. I did not enjoy this and there is more i can tell you of. Trust me if your kids Dont no some miner stuff they will turn into an Owens. Hes a kide that is a little pervert that no one likes Hes perents wer like you guys but now hes 15 one the internet and jacks off to anime :( sick cose i like anime and he makes it dirty. Just atleast watch one off the five. It wont harm them. Just have Dinner at the table with them and let them have their opinions. Dont treat them like kides. It really anoys me and I told my perants and now... they still treat me young (like 5. im 15) I do understand what yous or doing bout its a little too much bye :l
O and My perants own a gun (cant tell you why) And they showed me it at a young age. (not loaded of coures) and that was a good thing. If i found it and they never told me about it i would probly you know shoot somthing or some one becouse i would be soo excited like with a new toy and peraid about with it but i seen it at a young age and my dad showed me how to take it apart and re-assemble so it was old news soo i dont bother looking for it ( havent seen it in 6 years i think) and i now exactly wer it is in the house. The point is If you dont let them watch it now. If they find it and they like it they will crazz over it like how you see kides that find their dads gun and Bang bang They shoot them selfs couse they never seen one and didnt no any thing about them. I no im not good at making a point so shh :) doh yo ondersaaaand? p.s it was a priity good reson for then ownening a weapon. If your not Born in Irland or Northern Ireland you might not understand.
Why is Family Guy there when it isn't a kids show?
I love Family Guy! It's just so funny, and it dares to push the censors to the limit. I also love American Dad, which is created by the same people who created family guy.
Not too crazy about the Cleveland show, but, it has it's moments. I think Family guy will be around for a long time.
While the Cleveland show will probably be gone after this season. American Dad will last a few years to.
If it wasn't for the popularity of the Simpsons, we wouldn't be watching any of this stuff. I think the thing I like about these cartoons, is that they were not created for the sole purpose of selling a toy.
The show came first and the merchandise came later, not the other way around like all other modern kids shows.
check out our page - we have plenty of kids friendly cartoons

Not overbearing at all. At least you're being rational and limiting the scope to what it is that you as a parent will let your child watch without trying to ram it down our throats.
Plus, it seems like you're not outright banning your kids from these. You just don't want them to watch these shows while they're too young to understand reality from fantasy. And I wish more parents would take that responsibility instead of expecting the Ad council to do it for them.
When I was growing up the shows I was generally not allowed to watch were "Ren and Stimpy" "Pee Wee Herman" "Beavis and Butt Head" and while it wasn't around at the time, I probably wouldn't have been allowed to watch Southpark.
Oddly enough the reasons I wasn't allowed to watch those were for about the same reasons you won't let your kids watch these shows.
you make a lot valid points there. to be honest, i never really thought about it that way. even though i personally loved all those shows you just mentioned as i find them hilarious. however, i would never let my kids watch them though if i had any that is. lol. thanks for the great read.
Jesus christ, lighten up will ya. The only show on that list that kids shouldnt be watching is family guy, not because its bad for them, but because it's just a bad show in general. Ed, Edd, and Eddy= hilarious. Misadventures of Flapjack= genious. Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy= not so good of a cartoon. Chowder= hilarious.
Wow. You're dumb as a stump aren't you? Family guy I get, it's geared towards adults. But the first four? Your kids are going to grow up to be real pussies. Everybody laughed their asses off when I was in school when one of the kids said something like "oh, parents won't let me watch catdog" or some other such show. There is really NO good reason to do what you're doing. You're an overbearing bitch and I hope some serial killer comes and takes you're stupid ass out. Your kids would probably be better off. I can only imagine if you're this much of a bitch about cartoons, those kids lives suck in plenty of other areas too. Now you're going to churn out more moralizing pieces of shit for children that ruin it for us all and raise a big stink when some woman's nipple pops up on the screen. It's people like you that make this world suck so bad.
Most of the people who agree with this are old conservative people who don't understand the complexity of todays world.
wow, talk about over protective.
Im only 11 and im alowed to watch South Park, Family Guy, The Simpsons, etc.
Its up to your kids what they watch. You seem like you can trust your kids not to watch these cartoons so you should also be able to trust them not to repeat any of the langige (wrong spelling).
K.B.S.
I'm 18 and I watched all those cartoons back in the day (besides Flapjack and Chowder, of course) when I was like 9. The only thing that happened by watching them is that I discovered my love for drawing & animation.
Who cares if Ed, Edd n Eddy is about a bunch of scamming kids? You really think that's going to teach your children to be dishonest or something?
That's basically implying that children are inherently evil, and if they're exposed to something that's not positive and happy and full of sunshine, they'll instantly become little soulless monsters.
(By the way, Family Guy isn't presenting itself like it's a show for kids. Quite clearly it's an adult show. I really despise the notion that just because something is animated, that means it must be for children. It degrades and insults the art of animation. That being said, Family guy isn't certainly isn't art.)
Kids aren't influenced by cartoons. Disgusting and disturbing humor in animation is hilarious when you're a kid. Ironically, it helps you grow up normally, instead of being sheltered like some creepy homeschool kid who was never allowed to view mainstream shows/movies.
dam i like family guys the other cartoons are for little kidies
Just came across this page by complete random - but have to say that you sound like the perfect parent to me.
Never watched any of the cartoons you mentioned (other than Family Guy), however you seem to be following the correct route to me of guiding your children through the vulnerable part of their lives. And then letting them make their own choices when they reach a suitable age.
OMG TRIPLET MOM U ARE SUCH A PIECE OF SHIT!! UR KIDS ARE GUNNA B FUTURE COLUMBINIST ND SATANIST! LET THEM WATCH WHATEVER THEY WANT, I BET UR A LITTLE WHORE ND A NASTY GIRL HUH? U LIKE WATCHIN THAT PRONO WIT YA MAN HUH?? I HOPE U LEARN THAT THESE SHOWS ARE BEAUTIFUL ND THEYRES NOTHING BADS WITH THEM!!!
I'd like to give an opinion based on a kid's view on this topic, if you don't mind.
The first thing that I'd like to point out is that you used the word 'obnoxious' quite a few times in your descriptions. As children, we don't find these cartoons 'obnoxious'. In fact, a lot of us find these shows to be quite hilarious. We like the pointless, random story lines that these shows come up with. For instance, the man who owns the Candy Barrel in Flapjack has a 'candy wife', and he says it in this creepy voice. You may find it disturbing, but I find it laugh out loud funny. My friends and I joke about it all the time.
The second thing I'd like to point out is the fact that you are an ADULT. These shows are made for KIDS (with the obvious exception of Family Guy); they are not setting out to entertain you or other adults.
An example is that I can distinctly remember a time when I enjoyed sitting down and watching Blue's Clues, but when I see it today, I can't help but think 'this show is a bunch of garbage, why did I ever like this show?'. The reason for this is that Blue's clues is a little kid's show. It's not made for a teenager, so of course I won't enjoy it.
I also bet that most people go through the experience where their parents dislike or hate what they like to watch. My parents watched MTV when it first came out, and my grandparents hated it. There is a generational gap that shows up here. What may have entertained you as a child, may not entertain children of today.
YOU grew up, while THEY are still children. Let them be what they are; kids. Let them watch shows that set out to entertain THEM. More often than not, children find the shows that adults watch (such as CSI or Law and Order) to be quite boring and 'obnoxious'. I certainly did.
And as for your opinions about Billy and Mandy, I generally agree. I find the show to be a little too creepy for me (I was a kid who got nightmares easily). However, I know that a lot of my friends really enjoyed watching that show. Also, in my opinion, the show 'Courage the Cowardly Dog' that played all the time when I was growing up, was much much creepier than Billy and Mandy.
I was allowed to watch any of these shows growing up (exception of Family Guy), but I didn't. If I didn't enjoy a show (Ed, Edd, and Eddy), I just didn't watch it. It is my personal opinion that if you say to a child that you can't watch a certain show, it just gives that show a magical glow to it. It's like the forbidden fruit, I guess. When my parents told me I couldn't watch The Simpsons, I felt that the show had to be something amazing that my parents were hiding from me. But, if a parents allows their children to watch cartoons, they won't be disillusioned into thinking that it's something better than it is. They'll see the show, and if they like it, they'll watch it; and if they don't like it, they won't watch it. Does that make sense? I kind of rambled on.
P.S. I totally understand about not letting your children watch Family Guy though. I'm just talking about cartoons geared towards children.
It is this kind of mentality that ruined cartoons!
If you do not want YOUR children to watch certain things fine that is YOUR choice. But using the word "BAN" is absolutely ignorant! The reason we do not have cartoons like Road Runner, Bugs Bunny, and Daffy Duck are because of a bunch of uptight people saying they should be banned!
We live in America and I for one find it absolutely ok for you to decide what you let your children watch. Just don't start trying to tell others what they should and should not let their children watch.
The only reason I am posting a comment is because out of all of the views against yours are rude and uncalled for. I just thought I would give a opposing view without the hate and anger. But really stop implying we should ban cartoons. If you do not like it turn the channel.

when I Was a kis,the show my parents wouldn't let me watch until I was Not 10 Years old Wasn't even a Cartoon, it was "All In The Family". that was all I remembered I Couldn't watch As A Kid. if You think the old Bugs Bunny/Popeye/Woody Woodpecker/Tom & Jerry Cartoons were harmless When they were made in the 40's-60's,look again; "Loony Tunes,""Tom & Jerry" & Some early H-B Cartoons From 1958-1966 were originally made for Adults, especially the Flintstones (a "Honeymooners' Parody;Winston Cigarettes was even their original sponsor & had all 4 lead characters Smoking Winstons,at Least until Pebbles was born, then the Winston ads were dropped),&Top Cat (A "Sgt, Bilko" Parody; Top Cat & his cats were a bunch of freeloaders Who Always Schemed & sometimes stole things behind Officer Dibbles' Back.)The Loony Tunes Cartoons as well as the Popeyes & Tom & Jerrys Had plenty of racial & Sexist Innudiendoes In Them; Who Can forget that Tom & Jerry once Had A Black Sterotype of A Maid Named "Mammy-Two Shoes," that Bugs Bunny Dealt with Everything from Mexican Sterotypes to Japanese War Soldiers ( One Cartoon was even called "Bugs Bunny Nips THe Nips" from 1944:It was pulled off the air in 1968.)And Popeye Also Fought Japanese & Native American Sterotypes (1945's "You're A Sap, Mr. Jap was Considered Notorious; And let's not forget Looney Tunes' infamous 1943 musical take off Of Snow White with an all-black Cast, "Coal Black & De Sebben Dwarves"(Yes, that's the correct spelling of it On the Original Thaeatre Lobby Cards; all of them were shown in matinee Theatres Long Before television.)My Personal Beliefs were changed permantely when John Kricfalusi hit the airwaves With his "Ren & Stimnpy" in 1991,& they haven't been the same Since then, there's no turning back for me, For Mr. Kricfalusi Is one of those Long Loine of stubborn, but creative Cartoonists Who Don't Take Censorship Lying Down For Anyone; other cartoonists Like Seth McFarland (Family Guy),Seth Green (Robot Chicken),Danny Antoucinni (Ed,Edd, &Eddy),C.H. Greenblatt (Chowder, & the more recent Fish Hooks On Disney's Cable channel),Max Atoms (Billy & Mandy),& Matt Stone & Trey Parker (South Park) Are just simply continuing in Mr. Kricfalusi's lead In Continuing An old & Traditional Cartoon (De)Evolution Since the 1920's. If The Parents hate it, Chances are The Kids will love it; Censorship or not, It's Always been that way, & probably Always will. BTW: Nearly all of these Adult cartoonists Have children Themselves;"Flapjack" was supposedly based On Creator Thurop Van Ortman's own Little boy,& apparently the entire Van Ortman Family Sees no harm In The "Flapjack" Cartoons; to Them It Means a Continuous Job for Mr. Van Ortman to put food on their Table, & the same goes for all other cartoonists; It's simply A living.Regarding Mr. Antoucinni's work on "Ed, Edd, & Eddy" in it's disgusting Jokes & Violent behavior, have you ever seen his early work he did for MTV Network, The deplorable "The Brothers Grunt"(1996)? Believe Me, it's so butt-ugly, it makes "Ed, Edd, & Eddy" Looks Like Child's Play In Comparison!

Glad to be observant of the Information. Please forgive me for my occasional Mis-spellings. I Type too fast, & My arm was sore the other day. One cartoon I Thaought was awful for kids: "Grim Adventures With Billy & Mandy". Mandy comes off as something as a femsle Lucifer, & treats Billy AND the Grim Reaper As Peons for reasons of Laughs & Violent sight-gags. IThought it was more for adults than for kids, & thought that CN Should have shown this in their late-night Adult Swim Line-up.
There is this one show...it's not a cartoon, it's live-action. It's a show about the Teletubbies, called " Teletubbies Go Extreme! " and it's not that nice. It's supposed to be educational, but there's too much words like " crap ". It's not the best show a kid could watch. I highly don't recommend it.
I agree. I let my kids watch the first episode and it already had the word " freaking "... I only watch it and if my kids ever want to watch it I give em the DVD for the original Teletubbies...they always look sad at the end...maybe i'm being a bit cruel on them...what do you think?
Wow, so your list is four Cartoon Network shows, three of which you gave no specific reasons for avoiding, other than that they're "disgusting" or "obnoxious," and everyone's stock answer, Family Guy. Well done. you've sure made a great case! Not.
First of all, good for you for not letting your kids watch Family Guy. It's not a kids' show! It is an adult cartoon. This might be tough for those over a certain age to understand, but we live in the age of adult cartoons. You also should not let your children watch South Park, Frisky Dingo, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, or Robot Chicken - any more than you would let them watch adult themed live action shows like Breaking Bad, Dexter, any of the various CSI-type shows where people are regularly raped and/or murdered, etc.
As for the rest, well, I don't really know what to say. I think those shows are all fine. I grew up with Ren & Stimpy, which sort of paved the way for "gross out" type kids' shows. Some of these shows you mentioned occasionally have some sexual innuendo as well, but you know what? That almost always goes over kids' heads. Twenty years ago, we had shows such as Animaniacs and Rocko's Modern Life, both of which had many "adult" references that kids rarely caught on to. Even if I had grown up a little earlier, there would have been stuff like Looney Tunes, which had a tendency to be quite violent as well as occasionally racist. Kids don't see things the way adults do. Some of the stuff you might think is objectionable isn't even showing up on their radar.
But yeah, keep 'em away from Family Guy. It's a grown-up show.
All of those shows are weird and strange and sophmoric ... But Family Guy is definitely for adults. Any parent who lets their kids watch it should be ashamed of themselves.
Man, Ed , Edd, and Eddy was weird but it wasn't that bad. I can understand Family Guy, although that's an adult cartoon. Growing up, I used to watch Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, and etc. People seem to forget that many cartoons back in the day wasn't all about wholesome, clean fun. Look at the old Looney Tune cartoons, I grew up watching that also and I turned out just fine. I honestly can't stand overprotective parents. Cartoons aren't suppose to teach kids stuff, it's about being a kid and having fun, something I believe many parents are taking away from the youth.
First of all, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and no way am I the person to tell you the right or wrong way to raise your kids. But I do want to let you know that all these cartoons aren't horrible.
1) Ed, Edd 'n Eddy - I honestly don't see your problem with this cartoon. Sure, it's stupid and pretty darn pointless, but a lot of people found it very entertaining. There was nothing really objectionable in this show aside from the characters calling each other 'dorks'. Could you please explain what is objectionable in this, because I must be missing something.
2) The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy: On the rare occasion I watched this cartoon, I put it on the same level of Ed, Edd, 'n Eddy - pretty pointless, but aren't all cartoons? If you're worried about the whole Grim Reaper thing - don't. Kids are smart enough to know fiction from reality and I don't think they'll be wanting to make friendship bracelets for Death any time soon. ;)
3/4) Chowder and Flapjack: Honestly, these are pretty funny. Minor innunedos made in these will probably just breeze over the kids' heads. (Just look at some of the jokes made in Looney Tunes - they were originally made for adults, after all).
5) Kudos to you for DEFINATLY not letting your kids watch this. Cartoons like South Park and Family Guy were made for adults and should not be watched by young children.
I hope that you can take the time to read over my concerns and respond. Cartoons are a valuable part of childhood and should be fun.
~C.G.
Firstoffsorry for bad typing I'm using my I pod. Well here, as a cartoon network expert I'll tell the truth.
Ed edd and eddy- I admit I always used to sneak this from my mom when it first came on and it was funny. My dad really didn't care, but my mom said that the stupidity of the show would dumb me down. I watched this, but not in front of my siblings.
Chowder- I remember all of the little kids would always watch this show, and I watched a lot of it with my siblings. Actually, now I find this show to be as dumb as all of the new shows.
Flapjack- same thing, but then this show also got really bad
Family guy- I used to be a fan of this show, but then everyone wouldn't shut up about it in my school, and I found it to be actually very stupid and over rated
Billy and Mandy- I'm actually considered to be a very crazy person, but in a humerus way, and I watched this show from 2001 on. Even though I'm older now and more mature, I still watch this show, even though I'm basically old enough to do anything. This show is just so creepy on so many levels, and I don't blame you from banning this with your kids. Very Twisted show, and easy to scare lids will be horrified by this show. Even though this is funnier than South Park, it's way more twisted in general. What im basically saying is that this show is more evil for a kids show then some shows are for adults.
All in all you have the right idea not letting them watch shows like family guy and tgaobam, but flapjack, ed edd and eddy, and chowder are actually ok to watch for them.
P.S. Also back in my day their was a show called Courage the Cowardly Dog, it was as creepy if not creepier than Billy and Mandy.
Omg you guys needs to calm down kids will not become like what they see in cartoons they may act like them FOR FUN!
I understand that you won´t let them watch Family Guys
but ed edd n eddy come on kids will learn from their mistakes they will learn that scamming won´t bring anything good and whats wrong with flapjack? he helps every one he meets isn´t that something people needs to learn from? ofcorse some people are bad but kids are not stupid
Chowder may be annoying because you are an adult but I don´t find it annoying
Billy and Mandy yes there is alot of disgusting things in it but i think you should let the kid/s decide if they can watch it or not
in my opinion you ruins alot of fun for kids
I'm not going to write an angry message only to be condescended with your generic response "THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENT AND OPINION". When I was a kid my parents never really censored me from watching any cartoons, including South Park and Family Guy.
Why? Because they knew I wouldn't understand the jokes and innuendo. And I didn't understand them until I was much older. Anyhow, I understand why you wouldn't let your kids watch shows like Family Guy, after all it wasn't aimed at kids to begin with, but banning/censoring the rest seems a little harsh.
I truly don't understand your logic for banning them simply because you don't like the shows. Sure, they're pointless but cartoons aren't meant to have a point to begin with.
You say your daughter began watching the history channel. And your fine with that? Seriously? Have fun explaining World War II and the Holocaust.
No offense, but it seems a little weird to me that you don't let your kids watch shows aimed at kids just because you think they're "gross", but you don't mind if they watch The History Channel where they often show real pictures of corpses and real attempts at genocide, among other serious issues.
Let them enjoy their childhood you know?
Thanks for sharing I love it.
I think it's okay to let the kids watch the "obnoxious" and "unrealistic" shows as long as you set them down and let them know it's fake and such behavior in real life is not decent. I'm not saying let them watch gore and such, but you need to have a little more faith in your kids. You can't censor every little thing in their childhood, or they'll be too afraid to do anything independantly. I don't expect you to let them watch adult cartoons, but you can't childproof everything.
To put it rudely, get the stick out your ass and quit covering your kids eyes at anything higher than G-rated.
I've been watching television as far as I can possible remember, earliest memory being 5 years old. I would wake up, just enough to see my dad off to work, after watching Ren and Stimpy. Granted, now that I'm 22, some jokes were adult natured and at the time, my dad got them, every time I was curious about a joke, I was left with the answer "I'll tell you when you're older."
I grew up in a generation of cartoons were aimed at both children and adults. I was told by my parents I was allowed to watch Nickelodeon, Fox, and Cartoon Network, but not any news channels, the History Channel, or the Sci-Fi channel without them in the room. I can safely say that watching the following shows with my parents, sister, and baby brother were just flat out funny:
Rocko's Modern Life, The Angry Beavers, Invader Zim, Adventure Time, and Mortal Kombat the cartoon. The best way I was told by anyone was this "If you protect yourself from any dangers in the world, the more in danger you are to yourself.", I was told this after I found out my cousin died for the common cold, because his immune system was shot because he was never sick, his home environment was too clean, and too much use of hand sanitizer.
Fact of the matter is, television is television, let the kids know that it's make believe, not to be taken seriously, or it can and will turn on you one day.
i really think its crazy that u dont let ur kids look at those cartoons because u think that they r pointless and obnoxious i mean they r CARTOONS for god sake some cartoons are pointless i mean i wouldnt let my children look at family guy but those first 4 are ok they are age appropriate kid friendly i mean yall r crazy those r cartoons that come on cartoon network it aint like they r coming on other channels like comedy central or anything................ n yall r crazy for agreeing bout those cartoons THEY R JUS CARTOONS!!!!!!!!!
Hi.
First of all, I'm not here to slander you guys or anything. It's just that, well, I watched all of these cartoons when I was a child, except for Family Guy, Chowder and Flapjack, because they didn't air back then. Anyway, all these cartoons besides Family Guy are TOTALLY kid-friendly. Maybe a 4-year-old wouldn't enjoy it but 8-14 years would like it. They're just really clever. And some cartoons, in my opinion, are for humor, not for teaching kids morals. Ed, Edd, n Eddy was my favorite cartoon of all time when I was 8, and it still is. And I turned out to be a really nice guy. And a funny one, if I do say so myself.
Not sure how I stumbled on this post, but I think it's very interesting. Being a teen myself, I've encountered several of these shows and think you have an excellent viewpoint on them. Ed-edd-&eddy, chowder, and flapjack are the reasons I stopped watching cartoon network; to me, the best reason to describe way is because they are stupid. Yes, they are minorly violent, yes, they are disgusting, but most of all, they have no point, and often aren't even funny because they are so random and pointless. (I will admit I personally like Billy and Mandy, since I'm a fan of magic, the grim reaper, etc, but it's right on the edge of being just as bad as the others). At my house, the Simpsons has always been banned, and unspokenly so have family guy, southpark, adult swim, etc. I agree that where there's a will, there's a way; I have snuck myself a few episodes of each, but I am thoroughly disappointed at the lack of reason and language. There's enough profanity and violence and stupidity in the world, so why encourage that? I grew up watching PBS and playhouse Disney, learning moral values and imagination and other important life traits. I'm glad that there's still people out there with their heads on straight who don't believe in the filth these generations are growing up in. Thank you.
Some cartoons can be violent and downright sexual. Certainly not appropriate for young children.
First off, I don't wish to offend you or your parenting style, but I don't agree with this. I'm sixteen years old, almost seventeen, but I think these shows (except Family Guy) would be good, or at least entertaining, for kids.
My parents weren't overbearing. They allowed me to watch Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Rocky And Bullwinkle, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab, and all the others. I don't have any mental illness, I make A's and B's in school, and I'm happy. I don't feel like my parents were holding me back from anything. Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing you or judging your parenting style. I don't have kids, so I really can't. I do know that kids need a certain amount of freedom. Without it, they really won't know what to do. If I had kids, I'd rather have them watching imaginative shows like Chowder, Flapjack, and Ed' Edd, and Eddy instead of boring shows.
Now, obviously, there are shows that are just not for kids. Family Guy, South Park, anything that comes on after 9 P.M central time on Cartoon Network. Kids usually go to bed around that time, anyway. If not, then just change the channel or put in a movie or something.
I read in someone's comment here (I don't notice who it was), but if a kid gets curious about something, they'll find a way to find out about it. The only way you would be able to prevent that is to watch them 24/7. I literally mean 24/7. Some kids will even stay up later than you just to find out. At least, I know I did.
Again, I didn't write this comment to offend anyone or to question anyone's parenting. Just my opinions and observations.
I do not mean to offend anyone, but this list seems a bit strange to me. Why would you even have Family Guy on here? It's clearly not a show for young children. It's not even in the same catagory as the others. Those are aimed at kids. Family Guy was made for adults. Secondly, I find that although you might not find these cartoons suitable for your children, it does not make them bad. These days there are many cartoons (including the ones you mentioned) that were made for kids older that singular digit ages. I'm just a teenage, but I was curious as to what moms let their you kids watch. I remember when I was younger there was a cartoon called Invader Zim. I was absolutely terrified of it, but now that I'm older, me and my friends love watching reruns of it because we're a little more mature, we can handle it and apprieciate it's humor. You can't control what your kids what forever, just remember that they will eventually begin making there own choices in life.
I found this as I had to collect my twelve yr old from a sleep over because she was upset that they all watched a 15 rated film that I know is full of sex references. all the girls were 12 or 13 and I just can't understand why parents think it is fine to let young girls watch things like that? Why can't adults just allow their kids to be kids for 16 years? You're an adult for a very long time!
This is the dumbest thing ever.
And the Saga of whiny moms continues......If you know Family Guy is an adult cartoon, why is it on the list? I bet you let your kids listen to Bieber.....
Megan you sound just like me and my girlfriend HAHA! We were going through Netflix the other day saw that they had all the episodes of Invader Zim and ended up watching them all. I think if cartoons from the 90's would come back to nowadays kids wouldn't be as obnoxious as they are today. They might actually be normal. H3ll while we're at it just bring the entire 90's back for all I care. And as for all the moms in here, it's fine that you protect your kids from these kinds of things but you are, not maybe but ARE, going to be the moms that come into the school every week and complain about their kid getting picked on or made fun of you know why? Because they're gonna be used to being protected and not making some decisions on their own once on awhile. By decisions I don't mean "Do you want Mcdonalds or Burgerking?" "BURGERKING YAAAAYYYYYY!!!" I mean real decisions. That way they have the ability to fend for themselves in school by deciding not to have mommy come save them and that they can deal with the situation. Also everybody's so big on this stupid tell an adult if your being bullied? How stupid is that? It doesn't do anything except delay the bullying for when there's no adults around. Adults these days are just as dumb as the kids if not dumber. At least I've seen what it's like and I will have the ability to teach my kids to defend themselves but not become a bully just the way I did in high school by pushing back and saving other kids a$$es from getting bullied all the time, probably because the kids being bullied had parents like you people.
Wrath, poormansWRATH, sorry I've got a touch of OCD but anywho I wasn't making a connection between what what TV shows they watch and if the kid gets bullied. I was stating that the more that you protect them from simple little things, the more they will rely on mommy to come protect them some more. And black belts? That doesn't matter in school where physical misconduct is frowned upon for the most part (at least my school it was). I'm not saying fight fire with fire, I'm saying fight fire with water if that makes sense. If they just stand up to them, not beat them to a pulp by opening up a can of black belt whoop a$$, not by backing down when they get in their faces and going home and whining about it to their parents, but literally stand up to them. They will find that nothing will happen because pretty well all bullies are all show and no go. Being that I just graduated last year I still fondly remember both bullies that I managed to one way or another pi$$ off over stupid reasons and ended up standing up to them ending both their reputations as bullies because they did absolutely nothing. They just need to know they aren't scary to everyone. Yes, I went off point by talking about bullying, but not completely. I'm saying the more you shield them from simple things like TV shows the more they will rely on you to shield them from things they can solve on their own. I meant no disrespect for you or your family. My apologies if you feel I have done so.
Okay, I posted this, but in one way or another, it was deleted. Seriously?
I just hope you actually read this thoroughly and reply to my arguments without dismissing them.
1. Okay, first off, yes, Family Guy and the like are not appropriate for children… Because they aren't meant for children. TV-14 is the rating, I believe.
2. Second, I am going to tell you that you are absolutely wrong and closed-minded about the cartoons meant for children.
3. Third, I can guarantee that you have not seen enough of each series to be able to make a proper judgment.
4. I’m raging harder than the Hulk on steroids after being told he failed Math for the fifth time because of your irrationality.
I’m going to tackle the first four shows first, then specific arguments.
[Ed, Edd, and Eddy]
Ed, Edd, and Eddy is a classic, and you obviously have not watched more than five minutes of it. Yes, the schemes of Eddy trying to get money for jawbreakers tend to be at the center of the plot, but the episodes are more in depth. You said “scam,” too; a lot of the plans actually tried to give the people paying a service. But wouldn’t you agree that the message is that scheming and scamming doesn’t bring any good, since all the schemes backfire in their face?
This show lets the imagination run wild with the seemingly improbable, yet possible, creations of Double D (Edd), which are made of material that is available to children. Obviously, your children won’t be able to make the tallest rollercoaster in the world, but didn’t you ever try to make something at home?
Above all things, this cartoon hits home because if combined Ed, Edd, and Eddy, you would get me as a child. I was smart, socially awkward, and constantly trying to be accepted by society. You must not have watched much of the episodes, since a decent amount of them truly show how the Eds aren’t as evil as you make them out to be. The main message the show conveys is that EVERYONE wants to be accepted, but you would only understand that if you watched the show.
Also, what do you mean by “this cartoon just seems really pointless to me”? That’s an extremely weak argument, if you can even call it that, and leads me to believe I was correct when I thought you hadn’t watched it enough. Obviously, I just covered the “strange message it sends children.” Do all messages need to be spelled out for kids? Do you not believe your kids are smart enough to understand it unless it’s spoon-fed?
[The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy]
[Chowder]
[The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack]
(I put all these together because it’s the same thing.)
A little better suited for the ones around 7 or 8, because it may seem scary if context is not understood. Honestly, I don’t know what to tell you, because you have no specific examples. You only have your opinion, with nothing backing it up, besides “I’m a mom and I know what’s best.”
The show is plain funny, if you aren’t trying to tear it to pieces while watching it. You must seriously shelter your kids. It’s a show that deviates from reality, and why do cartoons have to be so serious? So what if it’s a little more on the raunchy side. Your kids don’t have to learn a god damn lesson every time they watch a 30 minutes block of television.
Seriously, the video you posted with the singing cut-scenes of Flapjack are funny. That’s all you need. If it makes your kid laugh, then that’s all that matters, in that particular situation.
Now, I’m going to tackle some arguments/comments made by you.
[I would think that Who Killed Roger Rabbit would be more of an adult movie. I have not seen it in a long time but I remember a great deal of sexual innuendo.]
Oh, come on, seriously? Just because Jessica Rabbit is sexually provocative in a couple scenes? You realize that by around 10, puberty is hitting. I personally started puberty when I was 6. Also, it’s rated PG.
[Nicomp-Yep, the word 'cartoon' used to mean 'kid safe'. Now, not no much. Good writing!]
I know this isn’t you, but no, “cartoon” never meant “kid safe”. Please look back to the time of Looney Tunes and the like. Racism, alcohol and tobacco use, and other sly things only parents would get are rampant in these.
[You are better off not knowing about any of the others they are not worth a second glance.]
This is ignorance at its finest. You definitely did not watch the shows. You took two glances and thought, “I’m not sure about this show, but it’s a lot easier just to ban my kids from watching it.”
[I am not sure about letting them watch the news so much; a little bit here and there. Maybe when they are older.]
What the hell, lady? You won’t let them watch the news? Are you serious? Maybe you should let them out of the holding cell in the basement sometime. I’ve heard some dumb things, but not letting your kids watch the news? I’m sorry; I honestly feel bad for you and your paranoia.
[Vizey - Thank you. Yes monitoring the sites that your children go to is just as important as the shows that they watch.]
If you raised and taught your children right, you will not have to worry about what sites or shows they watch. Sure, they may watch a porno on the internet, or watch South Park one night. That’s because that’s what kids do. They’re curious and they need to make their own decisions sometimes.
[LandthatIlove - Its not so much the inuendo that I am concerned with as it is the content. Some of the cartoons are just violent and shocking. It is a big adjustment from the cartoons that I grew up with. I would also disagree some children do understand what is being presented in cartoons.]
Oh, fuck no. Excuse my language, but hell fucking no. The cartoons you grew up with are much worse. Donald Duck as a Nazi? Blackface Bugs Bunny? Alcohol use and abuse? Constant, obvious sexual themes? Rape? Innuendo of inappropriate things (especially by your standards)?

^There’s a link if you don’t believe me. I’m seriously in awe of what you just said.
[Informed - What you are describing is not censorship but parenting. Parenting does not mean sitting your child in front of the television and letting them watch everything that is on. Not all television programming is meant for everybody that is why there are ratings. Not letting my children watch certain shows does not mean that I am censoring them nor does it mean that I do not give advice in fact that is far from the actual truth. Thanks for your comments.
You did not read their comment. Nowhere in it did they mention sitting a child in front of TV is parenting. They were speaking about how being over-bearing will harm a child later in life when they realize that there’s stuff outside of the bubble you kept them in (if you ever let them out). You then said that children aren’t equipped with the ability to distinguish social skills and the like, but the commenter said that children are born with the ability to LEARN how to do so. You are a very selective listener/reader; you keep backing up my statements, the more I read.
Please, reply sensibly. And not the same generic answer you literally gave everyone else that had different opinions than you. “Well, I respect your opinion and view, so let me state my vague opinion again, even if it has nothing to do with your comment.”
I would also be more than glad to video chat with you, if you believe I am some person that gains a puffed up chest when no one can see my face.
-Kris C., a soon to be 19-year-old who is a hell of a lot more rational than you are
"I am not going to go point by point on your comments but what I will tell you is that as a parent there are choices that you make and some parents choose to let their young children watch anything they want to without supervision. This in my opinion is not healthy."
So basically, you ignored what I said, and vaguely stated an opinion.
Your answer literally bypasses my arguments just so you can say what you want. I do not believe sitting your children in front of a TV is parenting, nor did I say that ever, nor was that something I was trying to discuss. You don't need to tell me what other parents are doing because that isn't the point, nor am I talking to other parents. I'm commenting on your list of your household's banned shows.
I had many different points, and you must have not read them. I did not say that your kids will turn out maniacs, because chances are they won't, nor do I doubt that they are smart and well-rounded. Once again, I am not speaking about that.
I said Family Guy was not for young children. I said Ed, Edd, and Eddy was for all ages. I said the rest were for 7 to 8 year olds (TV-Y7 rating).
Fine, throw Chowder, Flapjack, and Billy & Mandy out. That debate could go on forever with no outcome. I'm not going to talk about other things you've said. I'm just going to talk about Ed, Edd, and Eddy because I'm going to make sure I at least get some sort of straight-forward answer.
Read that, and now I have one question that I will hope you answer:
What is your opinion on what I said about Ed, Edd, and Eddy?
Man talk about neurotic. You sound like my sister... I'm 25 and my fiance is pregnant, I came along very late in a big family and as such I have many nieces and nephews.
I grew up watching all those shows except family guy. Cartoons didn't change any factor of my life whatsoever, well except that I had something to do when I wasn't playing sports. I earn double what most people my age group earn and I don't do it through 'scams'.
My parents brought me up to not swear which I never did around my elders (I did it when they werent around anyway along with 90% of the rest of normal human beings), not to put my elbows on the dinner table, how to pronounce words correctly, when I was allowed to watch (generally if my homework / chores were finished) - the list goes on. Those are qualities you should teach your kid in life.
Honestly it feels like the world is going insane. Really, what makes you think they get half of the innuendo in the first place? I never got alot of the looney tunes jokes till I was much older, now I can still watch them and thoroughly enjoy myself. By the time they do get them I'd expect you have taught them the difference between right and wrong.
The only cartoons I'd keep really young kids away from is shows like generator rex, for any age group above 12 or so it's an awesome show but I think it could end up giving some kids nightmares. I wouldn't want to see it taken off the air though.
You have this plan to place your kids in a protective bubble, that's all fine and well, best intentions etc. What happens when they venture out into the real world and realize it isn't all pink fluff and poneys? I'm not just talking about cartoons, I'm talking about being overly protective and reading into things way too far. They will either be social outcasts or completely gullable, with any luck they'll meet some friends at a young age who are a little wiser to the world. We're not living in the past anymore.
I've had previous relationships split up over ex's families. They interfere with each and every detail of our life and I can't take it. I'm an independant person and I like to stand on my own 2 feet. They get caught up inbetween a world of a manipulative mother giving her each and every input on her life and both of us wanting to break away so we can do our own thing and cut the umbilical cord.
I'm so glad my fiance is independant like me, we both love our families. Neither of us fight to get away from our folks unlike friends who have had parents breathing down their necks their whole lives. They taught us what we needed to survive and how to socially interract with people, the difference between right and wrong. Certain restrictions where NECESSARY but for the most part let us live our own lives.
You all did something stupid weather your parents were against it or not. It's gonna happen with your kids nomatter how hard you dig your claws in, maybe not exactly the same but it will relate. Just how guilty you make them feel for it, or how severely they react to the situation will be a part of your programming.
I think a better life lesson is teaching them how to think for themselves and make a decision based on good judgement, not how to let you think for them or they are screwed. Anyway as said above somewhere they are your kids and you can raise them how you like. As for mine, I'll go to the ends of the earth for them, just like I do for my nieces and nephews. But I'll let them grow up in the world the way it is with the guidance of their parents thanks, preferably without the neurosis.
I say stop being so soft and dramatic and worry more about how you will keep them away from drugs and make yourself approachable by your kids. I want my kids to feel safe with me, like no problem is too big for me to handle - not that I'm gonna flip out, because I already dictate what cartoons they are allowed to watch and other such nonsense while their friends are free to be 'normal'. I'll watch cartoons with them because I enjoy most of them, not because I'm seeing if it's wholesome or not. Obviously adult cartoons such as south park and american dad are out of the question untill they are older.
Your such a stuck-up person!
the lady who wrote this is not the brightest. not all cartoons are supposed to have a meaning they are just supposed to be fun to watch and fun to try to escape the real world too. so waht if some of them are pointless they are meant to make people laugh in this shitty world we live in today.
Shame on You for not letting your children watch cartoons of their choice. Ed, Edd n Eddy's a classic... Pff...
I totally understand were your coming from when you are parenting even f I was big sis in parenting role(you don't want to know) espically those under 12 and more so those under 10 everything is big deal. There were shows I banmed simply for fact they were tk simmilar to shows I watched when I clearly wasn't mature enough to watch them. I don't think its so much about age but is each child ready to watch such and such at certain time and you know your kids best so you can deem what is right and what is not at time thru out their time in your house. My siblings new rules tv rules included and I always watched with them when once sis turned 12 she watched her first ep of sponge bob after 5 mins she left room shaking her head and said thank you. If they wanted simpsons they had to ask so we could watch as family and if I deemed inapotoate they knew drill and it was only couple times a month under scrit guidlines and if they couldn't recite rules of watching they didt watch it I even went ad far as blocking some channels on some tvs as back when one who turned 12 was 9 her 7 yr ild friend tried t turn on muray yes I freaked that was show I wouldn't even allow self to watch have to say am proud if sister she dd attempt before I got to living room I heard to explain we don't watch that here but as she was 9 I knew shed be more tempted by peer pressure so was really just precuation and brother was only 7 and their were timez when at time had to rely shor term ither ss who was 13 and iccouldnt guarntee she wouldn't flip randim channel on for little ones and leave them but I dud montior as much as could. It needs to be.
