Savion Glover Tap Master
74
I love tap dance so much that I have actually already written a hub on it called Tap Dancing – My Secret Love. This is my secret love because I really do not share this about myself, people are often caught off guard when I tell them that I can tap dance. I take tap dance classes when I can (sometimes its difficult while taking care of children) and I find when I do that tap dancing really relaxes me and makes me feel good. Tap dance is a workout for me but at the same time it is also a great stress reliever.
I have been interested in tap dance since I was a little girl watching Shirley Temple movies. I would literally watch them over and over again to try and learn the steps. Truly there are so many old school tap icons that really brought tap to my attention; especially watching those old time movies. But no one has changed my view or amazed me as much as the feet of Savion Glover. Watching him tap dance can put me in a trance as I try to study his feet and name the movements he is doing without success of course. His feet are too quick and his movements to fantastic for me to even try and follow. All the same I enjoy watching him and trying to figure out what his feet are trying to do.
Savion is an amazing dancer, tapper and artist. His moves are incredible and he has a style all his own. Savion has not gone with the status quo when it comes to his tap dancing style. His dress, his shoes, his look are all uniquely his own. He obviously beats to his own drum and what an incredible choice he made doing just that. His style is loose and free and he wears loose fitting clothing that is different from old school tappers who dressed much more conservatively.
Savion Glover was born November 19, 1973 in Newark, New Jersey and graduated from the NewarkArtsHigh School. By the age of 10 Savion Glover was making his Broadway debut in the Tap Dance Kid an amazing feat for someone so young and talented. His next big break was in the 1989 movie Tap with tap greats such as Gregory Hines, Sammy Davis, Jr, Bunny Briggs, Harold Nicols, Howard Sims and several more. Savion Glover was able to hold his own in this film along side the greats that had come before him. In 1990 he joined the cast of Sesame Street a great transition and showcase for his talents. I enjoyed this stint because it really brought tap to a whole new light especially for young kids. Savion Glover was on Sesame Street for 5 years until he starred in the musical Bring in ‘da Noise/Bring in ‘da Funk which truly catapulted him into stardom. Bring in ‘da Noise/Bring in ‘da Funk was a dance musical that told the story, through tap, of black history from slavery to the present and Savion Glover was the choreographer as well as a dancer in this Off Broadway musical.
In 2006 Savion Glover worked as the choreographer and dancer for the main character Mumbles in the animated movie Happy Feet. This also brought about more accolades for Savion Glover as well as a new fan base of young children who enjoyed the movie and found out who really did have those happy feet.
These are only a few of the things that Savion Glover has done because there are truly so many things that Savion Glover has accomplished. Savion Glover has won a Tony Award for his work on Bring in ‘da Noise/Bring in ‘da Funk and many other accolades for his perfomances on and off Broadway. His resume is long and strong when it comes to tap and choreography; Savion Glover is a true talent. Savion Glover has come a long way in the last 30 years and still never ceases to amaze me with his talent. I am sure he will be tapping for 30 more years to come. Savion Glover is an amazing man, an amazing talent with feet that are from out of this world.

I like his loose clothing and style, but miss Gregory Hines. Glover taught here in a kind of artist-in-the-schools program over a decade ago and was said to be the next Hines, then Hines died. Too bad we can't have both.
Tap dancers are so special...I love them too...in fact when I was a girl I had a friend who's whole family tap danced and taught me how...I was never that good but it was fun and helped me understand just how much work it is...Nicely done hub sweetie...G-Ma :O) Hugs & Peace
